In England, drama had a distinctly religious origin from the church as the part of services. This drama called liturgical drama, in which the story simply taken from the scripture. The earlier play were given inside the church, the story were written by the clergy and performed by the clergy using Latin language.

The earliest origins of drama are to be found in Athens where ancient hymns, called dithyrambs, were sung in honor of the god Dionysus. One of these, the ‘City Dionysia’, a festival of entertainment held in honor of the god Dionysus, featured competitions in music, singing, dance and poetry.

The first English tragedy, Gorboduc (1561), by Thomas Sackville and Thomas Norton, is a chain of slaughter and revenge written in direct imitation of Seneca.

Did you know that there are only two types of plots in stories? According to Aristotle, at least. In his book Poetics — an analysis of tragedy and epic storytelling — he states that there are only two types of plots within the Greek Tragedy paradigm — Simple Plots and Complex Plots.

PURPOSE OF DRAMA: According to Aristotle the purpose of Drama is to arouse in the audience feelings of PITY and FEAR, and to purge these emotions (catharsis), thereby making people stronger emotionally.
