Edgar Allan Poe (1809-49) is perhaps the best-known American Romantic who worked in the so-called Gothic mode. His poems and stories explore the darker side of the Romantic imagination, dealing with the Grotesque, the supernatural, and the horrifying.

There is a possibility that The Black Cat may be the narrative of hanged slave, as well as being the story of a hanged cat. Poe is called a Dark Romantic due to the literary techniques he used in The Black Cat as his life influenced his writing.

In the New York Mirror of January 29, 1845, appeared, from advance sheets of the American Review, his most famous poem, “The Raven,” which gave him national fame at once. Poe then became editor of the Broadway Journal, a short-lived weekly, in which he republished most of his short stories, in 1845.
