It is installed as a part of the AD DS Snap-ins and Command Line Tools feature. Go to Remote Server Administration Tools > Role Administration Tools > AD DS and AD LDS Tools. After installing the component, to start ADSI Edit press Win+R and type adsiedit. msc.

You can indeed setup a query in ADSIEdit and search for a particular object in a huge environment albeit with some difficulty. In ADSIEdit, connect to the desired Naming Context, usually the domain, right mouse click on the domain node, choose New then Query from the context sensitive menu.

Click the Start button, right click the mouse over Computer and select Properties. In Computer Name, Domain and Workgroup Settings, select Change Settings. Select the Computer Name tab in the System Properties dialog box. Next to ‘To rename this computer…’, click Change.

In the Computer section, choose a domain controller to connect to, or default to the domain controller you’re logged in to if you are running ADSI Edit from a domain controller. Once you choose the naming contexts and the server to which you are connecting, you see them reflected within the ADSI Edit window, as shown in Figure 14.7.

To view the DomainNC Partition (Default Naming Context) In ADSI Edit, rt-click ADSI Edit, choose “Connect To,” in the Connection Point click on “Well known Naming Context”, then in the drop-down box, select “Domain”. Expand DomainNC or Default Naming Context, then expand your domain name. Drill down to CN=System.

In Windows Server 2003, the ADSIEdit.msc snap-in was a part of the Windows Server 2003 Support Tools. You had to download and install it manually. To register snap-ins, the command regsvr32 adsiedit.dll was used. Modern Windows versions have ADSIEdit.msc included in RSAT.
