There are two major English language computer keyboard layouts, the United States layout and the United Kingdom layout defined in BS 4822 (48-key version). Both are QWERTY layouts.

They can be divided into three main families according to where the A , M , Q , W , Y and Z keys are placed on the keyboard. These layouts are usually named after the first six letters on the first row: AZERTY, QWERTY, QWERTZ, QZERTY and national variants thereof.

QWERTY

A lot of tests and demonstrations have shown that DVORAK is a lot better than QWERTY. Estimates are that you can be more than 60 per cent faster typing on a DVORAK keyboard. The layout that takes the crown however is called Colemak. Colemak is relatively newer, and it’s easier to adapt as well.

QWERTY was first typing layout invented in the 1870s to complement the typewriter. It works very well with the typewriter, however, it’s actually a less efficient layout for modern day keyboards compared to the Dvorak and Colemak layouts.

Colemak is a keyboard layout for Latin-script alphabets. The layout is designed to make typing more efficient and comfortable by placing the most frequent letters on the home row. Made in 2006, it is named after its creator, Shai Coleman.

Dvorak layout is invented in 1936. Colemak is invented around 2005. Colemak proponents like you to believe that Colemak is the modern better more efficient layout.

Once you’re in the Keyboards settings, tap on the “Keyboards” button. In the Keyboards settings, tap “Add New Keyboard…”. From the offerings on the Add New Keyboard screen, we tap “Dvorak+Colemak”. And, we can then activate one or the other or both, then tap “Done”.

Yes it is worth it. I didnt try Colemak but according to resources its basically the same results as Dvorak while being easier to learn and since Dvorak was worth the work Colemak will be as well.

In terms of switching it’s a question of whether it’s worth a couple days of very slow typing, a couple weeks of slower than average typing, then touch typing more efficiently for the rest of your life. Major reasons not to switch to Dvorak: You can still type Qwerty after learning Dvorak, but generally a bit slower.

It’s not worth learning an alternative keyboard. While if you know QWERTY you can go your entire life never having to use another keyboard layout, if you learn Dvorak or Colemak you will still have to frequently use QWERTY. would make up for the time lost obtaining and learning to use it.

The idea behind Dvorak and Colemak is that the layouts are more efficient: if you type the same string on all three layouts, your fingers must travel further on QWERTY. If you’re typing thousands of words a day, that adds up. Many QWERTY key combinations are also awkward and difficult to type.

Colemak is absolutely wonderful: The work is spread out over both hands pretty evenly and the stronger fingers are used more than the weaker ones. Ctrl-V -X and C are preserved for cut-and-paste operations. As compared with QWERTY, QWERTY fingers travel 50% farther than Colemak.
