How to Download and Install Google Chrome OS

Google’s Chrome OS isn’t available for consumers to install, so I went with the next best thing, Neverware’s CloudReady Chromium OS. It looks and feels nearly identical to Chrome OS, but can be installed on just about any laptop or desktop, Windows or Mac.

Google Will Officially Support Installing Chrome OS on Your Old Computer. You don’t have to put a computer out to pasture when it gets too old to competently run Windows.

1. Download the Latest Chromium OS image. Google doesn’t have an official Chromium OS build that you can download.
2. Extract the Zipped Image.
3. Format the USB Drive.
4. Run Etcher and Install the Image.
5. Reboot Your Computer and Enter Boot Options.
6. Boot Into Chrome OS.

Though it’s not as great for multitasking, Chrome OS offers a simpler and more straightforward interface than Windows 10.

Chrome OS as an operating system has always been based on Linux, but since 2018 its Linux development environment has offered access to a Linux terminal, which developers can use to run command line tools.

If you don’t see the feature, you may have to update your Chromebook to the latest version of Chrome. Update: The majority of devices out there now support Linux (Beta). But if you’re using a school or work managed Chromebook, this feature will be disabled by default.

If Linux Beta, however, doesn’t show up in your Settings menu, please go and check to see if there is an update available for your Chrome OS (Step 1). If Linux Beta option is indeed available, simply click on it and then select the Turn On option.

It’s also possible that older Chromebooks, running Linux 4.14, will be retrofitted with Crostini support. Officially, you need a Pixelbook, Google’s top-of-the-line Chromebook, to run Linux.

It’s long been possible to install Linux on a Chromebook, but it used to require overriding some of the device’s security features, which could make your Chromebook less safe. With Crostini, Google makes it possible to easily run Linux apps without compromising your Chromebook.

Click Uninstall a program or Programs and Features. Double-click Google Chrome. Click Uninstall.

Therefore, you can remove and uninstall any installed Chrome extensions.

1. Click the Chrome menu ⋮ on the browser toolbar.
2. Click on the menu item More Tools.
3. Select Extensions.
4. Click the trash can icon by the extension you’d like to completely remove.
5. A confirmation dialog appears, click Remove.
