Flipgrid is a website that allows teachers to create “grids” to facilitate video discussions. Each grid is like a message board where teachers can pose questions, called “topics,” and their students can post video responses that appear in a tiled grid display.

The video-sharing tool Flipgrid, as we all know, is popular in schools—so popular, in so many countries, that its rapid rise been attributed to “Flipgrid Fever.” The tool has been free for educators to use for over a year now after being acquired by Microsoft.

Flipgrid is designed to allow students to speak to the group but without the same fear that might constrict responses in a real-world situation. Students can re-record responses, removing the pressure of answering in class, on the spot. Of course, it’s also a great tool for use when learning remotely.

A view is counted immediately after someone opens the video as well as when someone scrolls past the video using the mobile app. If you have 30 students with 30 videos, you can quickly reach 900 total views. If you do not want your students to see the view count on videos, you can turn this off in Topic settings.

Educators can choose to moderate videos on their Topics. This means videos are defaulted to be hidden from anyone else on the Topic and only visible to the educator. The educator can choose to make those visible or keep them hidden.

View and comment on videos Videos and comments can be viewed by anyone with the link and a UH login. Make sure to share the link only with your class. Click on the Flipgrid video you want to view. Below the video use the text box to add a text comment.

Learners can reply to a video with a video comment, text comment, or a text comment with a video comment. Learners can use up to 500 characters in a text comment.

Once you join the Topic, select the Record a Response or red camera icon to open the Flipgrid camera.

1. Record the video. Select the record button on the bottom of the camera to start and pause the camera.
2. Review the video. Trim, rearrange, or add more video clips.
3. Submit your video!

Encourage your learner to write a letter to family, friends or classmates and then share on Flipgrid!

Flipgrid Support. Educators can freeze a Topic to prevent new videos from being submitted, while still allowing learners to access and view the video Responses already submitted.

Flipgrid allows educators to share one specific video on a Group or Topic for view-only access and not allow access to everything else. This is a great way to share student videos with families!

Students can still watch videos in a frozen topic but can’t post new videos….Freeze/Hide Topics

1. You will see all topics in that group.
2. Click the Active button next to the topic.
3. Select Frozen or Hidden.

Frozen = students can only view videos. Hidden = students can’t see the Topic nor its videos.
