2 Answers. Show activity on this post. You should install Ubuntu on a separate partition so that you won’t lose any data. The most important thing is you should create a separate partition for Ubuntu manually, and you should select it while installing Ubuntu.

If you only had Ubuntu on your PC, the options should be same as what I have shown below. Select “Reinstall Ubuntu 17.10”. This option will keep your documents, music and other personal files intact. The installer will try to keep your installed software too where possible.

If you choose to install it to the same drive as Windows 10, Ubuntu will allow you to shrink that pre-existing Windows partition and make room for the new operating system.
