Continuing Competence. LPNs are required to complete 24 contact hours of continuing education and engage in 400 clock hours of LPN practice in each 2 year reporting period.

In West Virginia, an LPN will be limited largely to general care duties for stable patients. However, a licensed practical nurse may also be asked to assist with or administer emergency treatments under the supervision of a registered nurse or physician.

The essential difference between LPN’s and the RN is not task-related. First, LPNs must pass a national licensure exam prior to assuming nursing responsibilities. In my opinion, if an individual passed the NCLEX-PN, they have earned the title nurse. Although LPNs are under the supervision of an RN, they can complete many tasks.

In most circumstances, an LPN – known as a licensed vocational nurse, or LVN, in Texas and California – must work under the direction of a physician or registered nurse, or RN. Although an LPN cannot legally be a nurse manager, there are circumstances in which the LPN may be a supervisor.

The Licensed Practical Nurse is not permitted to give any type of drug through an IV line (depending on the state). The LPN may flush a peripheral IV line in preparation for the Registered Nurse to give an IV medication, but the LPN cannot actually give it.

To request verification of your WV APRN license be sent to another state board, please send a written request to our office that includes your name, license number, and the state where the verification is to be sent. Please include a cashier’s check or money order for $30 made out to the WV RN Board.

RN licenses: All currently active West Virginia RN Licenses expire October 31 of each year. The renewal period will begin September 1, and you must renew your license by October 31 or your RN license will lapse. I do not yet have my US Social Security number.
