Choose Project > Links Between Projects. View external predecessor tasks or successor tasks: To see a list of tasks that are linked to external predecessor tasks, select the External Predecessors tab. To see a list of tasks that are linked to external successor tasks, select the External Successors tab.

In the View section Task ribbon, click the Gantt Chart pick list button and select the Save View item at the bottom of the menu. In the Save View dialog shown in Figure 3, enter a name for the custom view in the Name field, such as Predecessor and Successor Analysis, and then click the OK button.

Predecessors specify the relationships between project tasks and indicate when a task should begin or end in relation to other tasks.

Factors that affect predecessors

1. Finish-to-start: The predecessor must finish before the successor can start.
2. Finish-to-finish: The predecessor must finish before the successor can finish.
3. Start-to-start: The predecessor must start before the successor can start.

Predecessors are tasks on which other tasks are dependent for completion. Predecessor relationships affect the Start and Completion Dates of the tasks and ultimately impact the timeline of the project. You can create predecessor relationships in multiple ways in Adobe Workfront. One method is by chaining tasks.

Choose View > Gantt Chart. Find the Predecessors or Successors column and select the cell for the task you want to link. Note: The Successor column is not shown by default. To show it, go to the last column in the row, and select Add New Column.

By definition, the predecessor is the first task; it controls the start or end date for all related successor tasks. The successor, by contrast, is the task whose start or end date is controlled by the predecessor. A dependency is the relationship between predecessor and successor tasks.

On the Task tab, in the Properties group, choose Information. On the Predecessors tab, in the Task Name column, select the task that should not be linked, and then select a task from the list to identify the correct dependency. Modify the link type, lag time, or lead time in the Type and Lag columns.

Start-to-start (SS) Indicates that the start date of the predecessor task determines the start date of the successor task. Finish-to-finish (FF) Indicates that the finish date of the predecessor task determines the finish date of the successor task.

A basic scheduling rule is that every task should have at least one predecessor and at least one successor. The obvious exception is the project start milestone, which has no predecessor, and the project complete milestone, which has no successor.

In MS Project, a predecessor is defined as a task which drives its successor task before it can start or finish. When scheduling projects, an individual task may have multiple predecessors linked to it. So, how do you know which one of those multiple predecessors is directly affecting the start or finish date of its successor task?

Each predecessor is linked to the task by a specific type of task dependency and a lead time or lag time. Best Uses Add the Predecessors field to a task view when you want to display or update task predecessors. Each predecessor task is represented by its task ID number, which may be followed by a dependency type and the lead or lag time.

If a predecessor is a task in another project, the Predecessors field also contains the path to the linked project, in addition to the task ID and dependency type. An example is: C://My Documents//Bldg_E_Construction.mpp//3FF.

In the Task Sheet view, the Predecessors field contains the entry “14FS+3d” for the “Write proposal” task. This means that task 14 is a predecessor of this task, with a finish-to-start dependency and a three-day lag time. Before this task can start, it must wait three days after the finish of task 14.
