Upgrade through Revit Save the model to the local file system. Open the model in the newer release of Revit to upgrade it. Finally, save the model to the newer release of Revit Server. Launch the legacy release of Revit.

When a Revit model is opened in any newer product version, Revit will automatically recognize the product version the model was last saved with and start the upgrade process of the project data for the version attempting to open the project file.
