The best way of finding a volunteer position within a refugee camp is to decide first who you want to help and where, then research which organizations work with that population. After that, you generally apply to volunteer directly with an individual NGO or charity group.

Refugee camps are temporary settlements created to provide refugees with immediate aid and protection. Forced from home, refugees are often left with little to call their own. Lacking food, clean water, clothing and proper hygiene supplies, refugee children and their families are vulernalbe to disease, abuse and worse.

Protein-rich foods include meat, fish, chicken, eggs, beans, cheese and milk. Fats and oils: These provide energy and help to protect our internal organs. They also help our bodies to fight disease. Foods in this food group include cheese, butter, margarine and oils such as sunflower or canola oil.

It can be a very difficult reality for families as they wait to be relocated in another European country. The process itself can take several months with numerous interviews taking place to determine their selected final destination country.

Getting in to the UN, in general, is not easy. You won’t get a UN position straight out of university; that wouldn’t make any sense, because you don’t yet have any experience. Then again, I started working at UNHCR at the age of 26, and I was the youngest international UNV here.

Having a master’s degree will increase your chances to get a job at the UN. However, you should concentrate on areas that are needed in the United Nations and you will also need at least one other language your own. Try to get an internship as well, as this is a good way to work out what you like and don’t like most.

United Nations Salaries

National UN Volunteers UN Volunteer assignments are not salaried, but include a Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA). The VLA is supposed to cover the cost of living and varies depending on the duty station. UN Volunteers are also provided with health & life insurance.

For entry level professionals (P1 – P3) the annual net base salary for example can range from USD 37,000 – 80,000 (obviously this can range from organization and is used as a guideline only). Having said that, salaries, grants and allowances paid by the United Nations are normally exempt from income tax!

Good news! the answer is no! There are UN system professional roles that only require a Bachelor’s Degree! Our advice, before applying carefully read through the job description. The “Education” section will give you more details on what degree is sufficient for the role.
