Certainly organized sport has a place in French society, however, with cycling, swimming, football (soccer), skiing, tennis, boules (pétanque), and, increasingly, golf, basketball, and martial arts being the most popular activities.

The French people are hardworking and dedicated, but that’s not to say they don’t know how to unwind. In fact, recreation and relaxation are just as vital to the French lifestyle as ambition and productivity. France has 11 national holidays.

In France, the legal length of the working week is 35 hours in all types of companies. The working day may not exceed 10 hours. Furthermore, employees may not work for more than 4.5 hours without a break. The maximum working day may extend to 12 hours under a collective agreement.

In France, if you’re a company of 50 employees or more, you cannot email an employee after typical work hours. The labor law amendment has come about because studies show that in the digital age, it’s increasingly difficult for people to distance themselves from the workplace during their off hours.

Officially, Latvia has a five-day working week where employees can be expected to work a 40-hour week. But in 2019, the OECD recorded the average week as just 38.8 hours.

Many people know that the 9 to 5 workday was actually introduced by the Ford Motor Company back in the 1920s, and became standardized by the Fair Labor Standards Act in 1938 as a way of trying to curb the exploitation of factory workers.

Most places consider 9-5 to be 8 hours (lunch and coffee breaks count towards the total). If we accept this convention, your workers are technically there for 9 hours a day for 4 days and 4 hours on Friday. Still clocking in 40 hours.

The 9-to-5 schedule — or something close to it — is still very much in demand, both because it can be seen as a status symbol often associated with white collar workers and because it holds a promise of consistency. People who work “9-5” are often salaried, and as such, it doesn’t actually matter how many hours they work, they get paid the same amount. They work slightly shorter hours (such as exactly 8 during the day with lunch included), but are expected to work extra hours as needed to complete projects.

A simple definition: “9/80s work schedule” is a compressed work schedule which consists of eight 9-hour days, one 8-hour day, and one day off in a 2-week period. Under a typical 9/80 arrangement, employees work four 9-hour days, followed by an 8-hour workday that is split into two 4-hour periods.

Most workplaces expect 8 hours per day and you have an unpaid lunch in there. 8 to 5 are common “normal” work hours assuming an hour lunch.

Regular, non-health care employees, are permitted, in California, to work four 10-hour shifts as a regular schedule. Time and a half does accrue as normal after the first 10 hours up to 12, and after 40 hours in a week. As per California overtime laws, employees still earn double time after 12 hours.

An employee working 10-hour workdays is more susceptible to feeling overworked and fatigued. Employees without the proper level of energy or those suffering from mental health disorders may struggle to complete the necessary job responsibilities. This, in turn, will lead to lower productivity in the workplace.

How to Survive a 10-Hour Workday

With a 4/10 schedule, employees aren’t working fewer hours. Instead, they’re working longer hours each day. You might choose a 4/10 schedule to ensure your technicians can work for longer stretches of time each day, and to make technician scheduling easier for you.

Is it permissible for employees to skip their lunch or break periods in order to leave early? Can employees if paid for it, have an “on duty” meal period? No. The California Labor Code § 226.7 invokes penalties against the employer if it fails to provide a meal or rest period.

Don’t I have a right to a break over lunch if I am working all day? The law only says you have a right to a 20-minute break if you work more than 6 hours. It does not say when the break must be given. As such, your employer is allowed to ask you to take your break at this time.
