How much gravel do I need?

1. Determine the length and width of a cuboidal excavation.
2. Calculate the area of the excavation, multiplying the length and width together.
3. Determine the depth of the excavation.
4. Multiply the area and depth of the excavation to obtain its volume: 18 * 2 = 36 yd³ .

If you want to cover an area with gravel, 1 to 2 inches should be sufficient depending on the size of the gravel. If you are using 3/4″ inch gravel or larger figure on at least 2 inches in depth to get good coverage.

Using 2 inches for the depth, the following measurements are a guide to the amount of gravel coverage per ton: 1/4 to 1/2 inch gravel, 100 square feet per ton; 1/2 to 1 inch gravel, 90 square feet per ton; and 1 1/2 to 2 inches gravel, 80 square feet per ton.

Bank Run Gravel is unprocessed gravel. Depending on the source, it can be 4″ minus, or a very coarse, clean, compact fill with 8″ and larger stones in it. It is usually the least expensive base or compact fill available.

Bank run gravel can be used in many different construction, landscaping, or road projects. Its qualities make it a top choice as a sub-base for driveways, roads, and under slabs. The stone and dust naturally bond together to reduce scattering, which, over time, increases the strength of the top layer.
