Based on our experience and what we see in other photographer’s bags, the three lenses favored by insect photographers who use full-frame cameras are the Nikkor 105-millimeter (mm) for Nikon mounts and the Canon EF 100 mm and MP-E 65 mm for Canon.

The high speed and wide aperture of a 50mm lens can also provide shallow depth of field. This gives you huge creative scope to blur out backgrounds and focus attention on your main subject. 50mm lenses also give attractive out-of-focus highlights (also known as bokeh).

Using a telephoto lens for near-macro photography will typically not allow you to magnify your subject as far as if you were using a dedicated macro lens. But you will be able to test the water to see if macro photography is something you enjoy without having to spend on any additional kit.
