Non-verbal behaviours that can help to defuse aggression include:
- Being aware of your own body language and showing a non-threatening, open stance.
- Keeping good eye contact but ensuring this does not appear confrontational.
- Moving slowly and steadily.
- Respecting the other person’s personal space.
- Ask for what you need rather than expecting others to guess.
- Calmly express your feelings.
- Explain your feelings and needs.
- Let other people know that you recognize their needs.
- Listen well to what other people have to say.
- Listening to and respecting others’ needs.
