Make the gusset Insert the tip of the right (empty) needle below both legs of the slipped-stitch column along the edge of the heel flap. Wrap the yarn around the needle as if you were knitting, then pull the new stitch through the work to create a new loop on the right needle.

Turn the heel. Turning the heel involves the use of short rows to shape the “cup” at the bottom of the heel. Knit across a prescribed number of stitches—usually a little more than half of the stitches.

The heel in a toe-up sock is usually a short-row heel. You shape a short-row heel by using rows in which you don’t knit all the stitches before turning—in other words, a “short” row. This type of heel looks similar to the heels on many commercially made socks, with a diagonal line running across the heel.
