Dichlorvos is effective against mushroom flies, aphids, spider mites, caterpillars, thrips, and whiteflies in greenhouses and in outdoor crops. It is also used in the milling and grain handling industries and to treat a variety of parasitic worm infections in animals and humans.

The draft notification, titled ‘Banning of Insecticides Order 2020’, prohibits the import, manufacture, sale, transport, distribution and use of 27 pesticides, including Acephate, Atrazine, Benfuracarb, Butachlor, Captan, Carbofuran, Chlorpyriphos, 2,4-D, Deltamethrin and others.

According to the WHO, swallowing 1,200 milligrams – less than a teaspoon – of monocrotophos can be fatal to humans. In 2009, it called for India to ban the product because of its extreme toxicity.

Monocrotophos appears as colorless crystals with a mild ester odor, commercial product is a reddish-brown solid. Used as a fast acting insecticide with both systemic and contact action against a wide range of pests on cotton, sugar cane, tobacco, potatoes, peanuts, tomatoes, and ornamentals.

The main uses of dichlorvos are for insect control in food storage areas, greenhouses, and barns, and for parasite control in livestock. Dichlorvos is generally not used on outdoor crops. It is sometimes used for insect control in workplaces and the home. Veterinarians also use it to control parasites in pets.

Why is DDVP banned? The substance is banned due to its potential to damage the human nervous system, and concerns over carcinogenic (cancer causing) properties. It is highly toxic.

Used as a fumigant, dichlorvos has found effective use at very low concentrations against houseflies, mosquitoes and mushroom flies. At higher concentrations it is effective against cockroaches and a wide range of storedproduct insects.

Dichlorvos exerts its toxic effects in humans and animals by inhibiting neural acetylcholinesterase (ATSDR, 1997). Neurological effects have been reported in a number of animal studies following acute oral exposure with little information on humans.

Deltamethrin can be mildly irritating if it gets in the eye. Although not common, individuals who have ingested large amounts of deltamethrin have experienced nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and muscle twitches. Deltamethrin is low in toxicity when it is touched or breathed in and is low to moderately toxic if eaten.

Dichlorvos resin strips killed bed bugs and eggs in just over 7 days. The addition of heat in treatments with dichlorvos resin strips enhances the overall efficacy of the volatile insecticide and reduces the time required to eliminate live bed bugs and eggs.

Dichlorvos is a broad-spectrum organophosphorus insecticide. Like other organophosphorus compounds, its mode of action is via the inhibition of cholinesterase activity. Dichlorvos is used primarily as an insecticide for controlling household pests and for protecting stored products from insects.

Applications

1. For localized surface application in homes, cabins, garages, basements and other labelled application sites.
2. Apply a two second application of product per 4-5 linear feet as a localized application with the spray being applied at 12-15 inches from the surface being treated.

Directions for use specify the product is to be diluted to 240 mL (60 g dichlorvos, 54 g chlorpyrifos)/10 L water and applied as a low pressure spray to the point of run-off to cracks, crevices, harbourages and places where pests may occur.

In most of the cases of poison intake, people are found to be consuming organophosphate, also known as metacid. This pesticide is found easily in the market and people going through depression or family trouble tend to consume such poison to commit suicide.
