Donkey Kong Jungle Beat can be played using either the DK Bongos Controller or a standard Nintendo GameCube Controller. When using the bongos, hitting one of the drums repeatedly sends Donkey Kong running in that direction, while holding down on the bongo causes him to walk.

We can see that the Donkey Kong Jungle beat has different versions. The traditional GameCube version requires bongos while the Wii U version does not require bongos, it can be played with a controller. If you also beat the side of the bongos, Donkey Kong would clap also.

According to fractic’s FAQ, no it does not require Bongos, and yes you can play it with the ‘Cube controller.

So far, all of the Donkey Kong themed games for the Nintendo GameCube have supported the DK Bongos, including the platform game Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat. The Donkey Kong games also work with standard controllers, but they were mainly designed for use with the DK Bongos.
