The lion has the loudest roar of all the big cats. This volume is all to do with the shape of the cat’s larynx. Most animals have triangular vocal cords but a lion’s are square and flat, which allows them to respond more easily to air passing through. This means a louder roar with less effort.

When a lion roars it is not out of fulfillment, but rather out of frustration. The lion doesn’t roar after a kill, it roars after a defeat. They don’t waste their roars on gloating.

Though they probably don’t experience the feelings of bravery quite like we do, they’re not afraid to hunt big, dangerous prey. “They’re the least afraid of anything of all the predators,” says Craig Packer, an ecologist with the University of Minnesota and one of the world’s foremost lion experts.

Although human beings can be attacked by many kinds of animals, man-eaters are those that have incorporated human flesh into their usual diet and actively hunt and kill humans. Most reported cases of man-eaters have involved lions, tigers, leopards, polar bears, and large crocodilians.

In the wild, groups of lionesses do attack lions, typically in defence of their cubs or territory, and such incidents have been filmed at safari parks.

It involves the predator grasping the throat of the prey and clamping tight so that the windpipe is either crushed or blocked. Cats use this to kill prey while dogs and hyenas use this to weaken the prey before eating it, generally alive. It’s more often used than the muzzle clamp and is generally safer, though slower.

Unlike territorial aggression or fear aggression, the pair of cats may get on perfectly well for most of the time but, just occasionally, the male, charges after a neutered female cat, who is clearly not receptive and screams as he launches himself at her from behind, biting her in the nape of the neck and wrestling …

Cats biting each other’s necks is commonly observed when mating occurs. This behavior protects the male by slight paralysis from an attack by the female cat or queen. Kittens have an instinct to remain still when their mothers pick them up and move them by the scruff, and adults still maintain this slight instinct.

For example, during play, one dog might chase and tackle another, or use a neck bite to force a partner to the ground. Similarly, dogs play bow to invite play and to convey playful intentions during play.

When your dog plays with his mouth open, it’s called mouthing or jaw sparring. This is a healthy way for a dog to play with other dogs. Mouthing mimics an actual fight, but without the serious biting. This soft biting allows dogs to practice fighting without causing harm to each other.

‘ Nips at legs. – This is more irritating to a dog than a bite to the neck. Dogs do this when the other dog is not paying attention.

If your dog is play biting, it’s a sign of affection; it’s gentle, he looks happy, and he might even be laying down. An aggressive dog, however, will growl, bark, or snarl, his body will be tense, and he’ll show his teeth. Aggressive bites are often faster than a play bite, and the big difference is you’ll feel it.

Dogs that chronically bite/chew/lick their paws or legs are experiencing more than just a typical itch. It could be that your dog has developed an allergy or is suffering from an insect/bug bite or a fungal infection.
