How to Stop Mold Growth in House

1. Control moisture. Keep the humidity level under 60 percent.
2. Dry up wet materials quickly.
3. Clean, disinfect, and dry surfaces prone to mold growth.
4. Repair leaks.
5. Dry items thoroughly before storing them.
6. Improve airflow at home.
7. Monitor your basement’s ventilation.

Mold will grow in places with a lot of moisture, such as around leaks in roofs, windows, or pipes, or where there has been flooding. Mold grows well on paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles, and wood products. Mold can also grow in dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation, drywall, carpet, fabric, and upholstery.

Indicators of SBS include: Building occupants complain of symptoms associated with acute discomfort, e.g., headache; eye, nose, or throat irritation; dry cough; dry or itchy skin; dizziness and nausea; difficulty in concentrating; fatigue; and sensitivity to odors.

Most mold is unmistakable, but sometimes small or largely hidden growths just make a surface look dirty. A quick test for mold can be done when you dip a swab in diluted bleach (1 part bleach, 16 parts water) and dab it on the wall. If the spot quickly lightens (or keeps coming back after cleaning), assume it’s mold.

Mold requires moisture to grow but can remain inactive for a while until it is exposed to moisture or high levels of humidity. Without constant moisture, mold will become inactive but they never die unless you get rid of them completely.

Besides being effective at removing bacteria and allergens, hot water also kills mold spores better. Of course, don’t surpass the maximum recommended water temperature to wash your clothing. If you have materials that can’t be washed, take them to the dry cleaner.
