How to Teach About World Religions in Schools

Q. What is the core message of all religions?

Transcendence, feelings of universal unity and decreased sense of self, is a core tenet of all major religions. Meditation and prayer are the primary vehicles by which such spiritual transcendence is achieved.

Q. Why is religious education important?

It helps with their own personal development & supports an understanding of the spiritual, moral, social & cultural questions that surface again & again in their lives. In tackling difficult questions it provides pupils with insight that can work to challenge stereotypes, promote cohesion, and tackle extremism.

  1. Just observe on field trips.
  2. Pick someone neutral and knowledgeable for guest talks on religion.
  3. Be an active moderator of any guest speaker on religion, including parents.
  4. Avoid dress-up exercises in the classroom.
  5. Stay away from anything else that resembles simulating ritual in class.

Q. Can teachers talk about their religion?

Teachers, as agents of the government, may not inculcate students in religious matters. Otherwise, they run afoul of the establishment clause. However, this does not mean that teachers can never speak about religion, for religion is an important part of history, culture and current events.

A public school curriculum may not be devotional or doctrinal. While it is constitutionally permissible for public schools to teach about religion, it is unconstitutional for public schools and their employees to observe religious holidays, promote religious belief, or practice religion.

Children should know and learn about all religions. It teaches children how to be open-minded and accepting of other people’s faiths and backgrounds. It teaches ethical values. RE helps to challenge misconceptions, prejudice and ignorance which can divide society.

Public religious practice had a moderate impact on academic performance using certain variables related to church meeting attendance. Religious belief variables were found to be completely negligible in their impact on the same. These findings agree with similar studies done with LDS high school students.
