To win at darts you have to get your score down to zero, without going over AND ending on a double. Say you got your score down to 42. To win, you could get a 2 and then a double 20. The dart that brings you down to zero has to be a double.

Rules: The object is to be the first player to hit every number on the board in sequence from 1-20. Hitting any part of the number – single, double or triple – counts, and numbers must be hit in order to advance to the next. Players alternate after three throws. The first player to hit a 20 is the winner.

If you’re with 2 points left you hit a double 1 to win. 4 left = double 2.

Re: what to do when there’s only 1 point left in 301 getting on 1 is the same as getting below zero, or on zero but not with a double. it’s called “bust”. this means that the darts you have thrown in this round do not count and you stay on the points you had before for the next round.
