How to Format Money in General Writing

1. Dollars and Cents without Numerals. Spell out references to dollars and cents without numerals.
2. Amounts of Money Less than $1.
3. Amounts of Money Greater than 99¢ but Less than $1 Million.
4. $1 Million and Greater.
5. Final Thoughts.

For US dollars, the symbol ‘$’ is sufficient abbreviation, unless there is a mixture of dollar currencies in the text. For other dollar currencies, ‘$’ should be prefixed with the country abbreviation. For all other currencies, write the figure first followed by the currency name, for example, ‘100 million yuan’.

You can write the amount in words by writing the number of whole dollars first, followed by the word ‘dollars’. Instead of the decimal point, you will write the word ‘and,’ followed by the number of cents, and the word ‘cents’. If you want, you can write out the numbers using words too.

You can say that 5 cents is 5 hundredths of a dollar since there are 100 pennies in one dollar. Let’s write 5 cents as a decimal using place value. The five is in the hundredths box because five cents is five one hundredths of a dollar. You need to add a zero in the tenths box to fill the gap.

$0.99 to (US) American English words

1. $0.99: lowercase. all lowercase letters: ninety-nine cents.
2. $0.99: UPPERCASE. ALL UPPERCASE LETTERS: NINETY-NINE CENTS.
3. $0.99: Title Case. Capital Letters at the Beginning of Words: Ninety-Nine Cents.
4. $0.99: Sentence case. Capital letter to start the sentence: Ninety-nine cents.

Most keyboards for iOS and Android smart phones let you access a cent sign. On iOS and Android devices, press and hold the $ symbol on the virtual keyboard to access other currency symbols, including the cent sign. Tap the cent sign or another currency symbol you need.

$ (Amount in Numeric Form): Put 92.00 in the box right after the $ sign on the same line. Make sure to include the decimal part 00. DOLLARS (Amount in Words): Write Ninety-two and 00/100 on the next field as far to the left on that line as possible. Use sentence case.

Instead of Ninety-one and 00/100, you may employ the fraction form Ninety-one and no/100, or Ninety-one and xx/100, just to name a few.

Writing a check for cents only involves two critical sections of your check: the number box and the number line. The number box is near the top, to the right side of the line that says, “Pay to the order of.” It should have a little dollar sign printed inside it or right next to it.

To write a number in words, write the number in each period followed by the name of the period without the ‘s’ at the end. Start with the digit at the left, which has the largest place value. The commas separate the periods, so wherever there is a comma in the number, write a comma between the words.

If you want to write a check with no cents or zero cents, simply put 00/100 or xx/100 in the place you’d usually put the cents. This field should be used to determine the value of the check if there is a discrepancy between the numbers amount and the words amount.

No “cents”: You might notice that the word “cents” doesn’t appear anywhere—you don’t need to use it when writing a check. It is sufficient to simply put the number of cents into the format above. If you want, you can certainly write “fifteen cents,” but it’s easier and faster to use the fraction format.

The full line below “Pay to the Order of” is where you must write out the exact amount that you would like to pay. If the amount you are paying is not even, write out the cents using the “0/100” format. For instance, a check for $1,574.50 would be entered as “One thousand five hundred seventy four dollars and 50/100.”

Fifty Dollars and 0/100 cents. Twenty-five dollars and 75/100 cents. Zero dollars and 50/100 cents. Two hundred fifty dollars and 0/100 cents.

$ (Amount in Numeric Form): Put 1500.00 in the box right after the $ sign on the same line. Make sure to include the decimal part 00. DOLLARS (Amount in Words): Write One thousand five hundred and 00/100 on the next field as far to the left on that line as possible.

When you see MP on your checks, usually near the signature line, it means that the check printer used microprint as one of the check’s security features.

Understanding the Parts of a Check

• Your information. In the upper left corner of your check, you’ll typically find the name and the address you have on file with your bank.

• The recipient’s name.
• The payment amount.
• Memo line.
• Bank name.
• Signature.
