Fuel is piped through fuel lines to a fuel control valve (usually known as the fuel selector). They pump fuel under pressure through a shutoff valve for each engine. A manifold or connecting tubing typically allows any tank to supply any engine through the use of crossfeed valves.

- Hook a clean hose to the outlet port and blow through.
- Note which port on the other side the air came through.
- Apply Ground to the body and +12vdc hot to the stud.
- Blow again. Air should come from the other port. If it does the valve is switching.
Q. How does a dual fuel tank system work?
The dual fuel tanks on a big rig “work” by having two pipes (one for supply to the engine and the other for return from the fuel rail) between the tanks. The truck draws fuel from both tanks at the same time.
Q. Why do Ford trucks have 2 gas tanks?
They were fitted there because they fit, only room on a tilt cab, you could fill both at the same time if at a real truck stop, a big advantage. Also fuel weights about 6.3 per gallon, so two tanks divides the weight.
Q. Why do some cars have 2 fuel pumps?
Because of high volume or high pressure requirements of certain engines. A car like the Ford Shelby needs two pumps to supply enough fuel to generate 700hp. Other vehicles with direct injection, have a second pump to raise the fuel pressure high enough to inject fuel directly into a combustion chamber.
Q. Why is the fuel pump really two pumps in one?
Because one side of the pump diaphragm contains fuel under pressure and the other side is connected to the crankcase of the engine, if the diaphragm splits (a common failure), it can leak fuel into the crankcase.
