It protects rainforest, beach, and mangrove habitats. There are hiking trails in the park that lead through the jungle and to one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica, Playa Manuel Antonio. Manuel Antonio is one of the best parks to visit for wildlife observation.

We would highly recommend Manuel Antonio Park during your next trip to Costa Rica. We only dedicated one morning to the park and I think on the next trip we would spend time hiking more of the trails and exploring a larger part of the coast within the park. For us, this park is certainly worth a visit!

Visit Manuel Antonio National Park Many hotels and local tour providers will recommend that you hire a guide to take you around the park, but we found it absolutely unnecessary.

While Manuel Antonio is generally safe, you should, as in all areas, take the normal precautionary measures against pick-pocketing, such as avoiding isolated areas and not wearing expensive jewelry. If you rent a car, keep it locked with the windows up anytime you leave it and park in well-lit areas.

Manuel Antonio park is a mile or so from Quepos and along the road that takes you there you will find several hotels catering to tourists. If you want more amenities you stay near the park, but Quepos is fine. If you are concerned about money then stay in Quepos and take the bus to the park.

Country Summary: While petty crime is the predominant threat for tourists in Costa Rica, violent crime, including armed robbery, homicide and sexual assault, occurs in Costa Rica. The Costa Rican government provides additional security resources in areas frequented by tourists.

The Best Places on Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast. Most travelers visiting Costa Rica think the Pacific side of the country is the better coast to visit. The remote Osa Peninsula, the monkey-filled area of Manuel Antonio, the surfing near Santa Theres, and the touristy Nicoya coast make it the superior choice.

The public bus is the easiest way to get around, it’s cheap, comes around every 30 minutes and drives between Quepos and Manuel Antonio on the main road, but then again taxis aren’t too difficult to find either.

Be careful in Quepos, which is the gateway town just outside Manuel Antonio National Park. The same goes for Tamarindo and Jaco due to incidents of crime (mostly robberies) targeting visitors.

The best way to get from San Jose Airport (SJO) to Manuel Antonio National Park without a car is to bus via Quepos which takes 5h 9m and costs $12 – $15.

The best way to get from San José to Quepos is to bus which takes 3h 10m and costs $6 – $10. Alternatively, you can fly, which costs $85 – $200 and takes 2h 17m. How long is the flight from San José to Quepos? The quickest flight from San Jose Airport to Quepos Airport is the direct flight which takes 30 min.

Uber Coverage is Spotty in Costa Rica Expanded coverage was announced in April 2019 but the pandemic of 2020 set things back and as of the 2021 high travel season over 3/4 of the country remains outside the official operating zone.

By Taxi or Uber If you’re starting from San Jose, it’s possible to take an Uber to Manuel Antonio. The 3.5-hour drive costs around $150.

Quepos is the gateway to Manuel Antonio National Park. The city is very tourism-oriented, having many bars and restaurants and a vivacious night-life. Quepos is well known thanks to being the gateway to a popular National Park and beaches in Costa Rica.

All of that aside, Playa Hermosa is a relatively safe place to spend either an afternoon or a vacation with a family. There isn’t an outrageous crime rate and the people are generally very nice and helpful.

Air: You can fly directly into the Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia, just 17 miles from Playa Hermosa. Local flights from San Jose are also available – Nature Air and Sansa Air offer 40-minute daily flights from San Jose into Liberia.
