Before machines, the first iteration of sound effects were created manually using fruit, glass, and other objects. BOOM! A nuclear bomb just went off before your eyes. You feel your heart pounding, and the explosion is still reverberating in your ears, but you can’t move your body.

Creation. Foley is created by the sound artist mimicking the actual sound source in a recording studio. Often there are many little sound effects that happen within any given scene of a movie. The process of recording them all can be time-consuming.

Sound effects were produced by people who mechanically created sounds during every performance of the show. In the 1930s, however, the recording industry expanded rapidly throughout the world. Along with recordings of classical and popular music, the first sound-effects libraries were developed.

Early history Long before sound was first recorded, music was recorded—first by written music notation, then also by mechanical devices (e.g., wind-up music boxes, in which a mechanism turns a spindle, which plucks metal tines, thus reproducing a melody).

On April 9, 1860—157 years ago this Sunday—the French inventor Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville created the first sound recording in history. An eerie rendition of the folksong “Au clair de la lune,” the clip was captured by Scott’s trademark invention, the phonautograph, the earliest device known to preserve sound.

The span of recorded history is roughly 5,000 years, beginning with the Sumerian cuneiform script, with the oldest coherent texts from about 2600 BC.

Some scientists date the Homo genus back only 100,000 years while others go back 11 million years and include Neanderthals, chimps and gorillas. Most say early humans first appeared between 2–3 million years ago. In common usage the word human generally just refers to Homo sapiens, the only extant species.

Overview. Homo sapiens, the first modern humans, evolved from their early hominid predecessors between 200,000 and 300,000 years ago. They developed a capacity for language about 50,000 years ago. The first modern humans began moving outside of Africa starting about 70,000-100,000 years ago.

In the Paleolithic period (roughly 2.5 million years ago to 10,000 B.C.), early humans lived in caves or simple huts or tepees and were hunters and gatherers. They used basic stone and bone tools, as well as crude stone axes, for hunting birds and wild animals.

20,000 YEARS AGO. Last Glacial Maximum- a time, around 20,000 years ago, when much of the Earth was covered in ice. The average global temperature may have been as much as 10 degrees Celsius colder than that of today. The Earth has a long history of cycles between warming and cooling.

15,000–14,700 years ago (13,000 BC to 12,700 BC): Earliest supposed date for the domestication of the pig. 14,800 years ago: The Humid Period begins in North Africa. The region that would later become the Sahara is wet and fertile, and the aquifers are full.

Lasting roughly 2.5 million years, the Stone Age ended around 5,000 years ago when humans in the Near East began working with metal and making tools and weapons from bronze. During the Stone Age, humans shared the planet with a number of now-extinct hominin relatives, including Neanderthals and Denisovans.

The 4th millennium BC spanned the years 4000 through 3001 BC. Some of the major changes in human culture during this time included the beginning of the Bronze Age and the invention of writing, which played a major role in starting recorded history.

Nine human species walked the Earth 300,000 years ago. Now there is just one. The Neanderthals, Homo neanderthalensis, were stocky hunters adapted to Europe’s cold steppes. The related Denisovans inhabited Asia, while the more primitive Homo erectus lived in Indonesia, and Homo rhodesiensis in central Africa.

Accordingly, not only in the modern era, but as far back as 4,000 years ago, practically all areas on Earth were drastically changed by human land use. Over-hunting, nomadic animal husbandry, early agriculture and the first urban developments had already affected almost all parts of Earth by this time.

Chinese civilisation advanced in this millennium with the beginnings of three noted cultures from around 5000 BC. Also about 5000 BC, the Hemudu culture began in eastern China with cultivation of rice, and the Majiabang culture was established on the Yangtze estuary near modern Shanghai, lasting until c. 3300 BC.

While our ancestors have been around for about six million years, the modern form of humans only evolved about 200,000 years ago. Civilization as we know it is only about 6,000 years old, and industrialization started in the earnest only in the 1800s.

If we took the whole 4.6 billion years of planet Earth history and compressed it in 24 hours, meaning that the planet was born at midnight and we were at the next midnight just now, this is what we would have: 23:23 – 37 minutes to midnight (our now), Africa is formed.

8000 BC that agriculture developed throughout the Americas, especially in modern Mexico. There were numerous New World crops, as they are now termed, and domestication began with the potato and the cucurbita (squash) about this time.

Approximately 8,000 years ago

3000 BC – Sumerians start to work in various metals. c. 3000 BC – Knowledge of Ancient Near Eastern grains appears in Ancient China. 3000–2000 BC – Settled villages are widespread in Mesoamerica.
