Merriweather’s hypocrisy comes when she criticizes Atticus (without naming him)–in his own house–for his “misguided” decision to defend Tom, all the while eating the food and refreshments that Atticus has purchased for the tea party. One thing that Scout learns from Aunt Alexandra throughout the course of the meeting in Chapter 24 is that this culture of Maycomb’s female socialites is marked with codes and certain ways of “being a lady.” More importantly for Scout, she learns that many of these ladies are hypocrites.

Jem refuses to leave when he sees that the men are threatening his father. Scout defends Jem when the burly man grabs him. She also unknowingly protects her father by causing the mob to disperse.

Chapter 24 is an effective chapter in Harper Lee’s portrayal of the hypocrisy present in the society of Maycomb: Calpurnia, who is good enough to cook for the Finch family is not allowed to make the teacakes for the ladies of the church. At the end of chapter 24, Atticus comes in during a Missionary Society meeting that Aunt Alexandra is hosting. He takes Alexandra and Calpurnia aside and tells them that Tom Robinson has been shot and killed trying to escape from prison.

On the night of the Halloween pageant Bob follows the children home and attacks them but Boo saves Jem and Scout but fatally stabs Bob Ewell. Atticus is convinced Jem killed Bob Ewell but Heck Tate (the sheriff) points out that Jem isn’t strong enough and after Bob broke his arm he wouldn’t have been able to stab him.

Mr. Underwood is the owner, editor, and printer of The Maycomb Tribune, the town’s newspaper. He works and lives in the Tribune office, which is located across from the courthouse, and spends his days at his linotype. He constantly refreshes himself with his ever-present gallon jug of cherry wine.

7. Mr. Underwood writes an editorial to confront society.

Underwood was protecting Atticus from the angry mob that was trying to kill Tom Robinson. Mr. He values Atticus’s life, and wants to protect him. While he may not want to save Tom Robinson’s life, he would want to protect Atticus.

“the courthouse and jailhouse news simply by looking out his upstairs window.” His office window looks directly out at the jail where the mob has gathered. After the mob disperses, Mr. Underwood tells Atticus that he had him “covered all the time.” In some senses, Scout also “covers” Atticus.

When Bob says “One down… two to go” he is talking about getting rid of Jem and Scout. He has already taken care of Tom and feels that getting rid of Jem and Scout will teach Atticus his final lesson.

Bob Ewell is angry because Atticus Finch has proven him a liar before the citizens of Maycomb who are present at the trial. His threat to “get even” with Atticus Finch is a real one and, because he is unconscionable, he will probably do something underhanded in order to avenge himself.

Mr. Underwood, in a fiery judgment against the shooting of Tom Robinson as he escaped, declares that “it was a sin to kill cripples, be they sitting, standing, or escaping.” He likened Tom’s death to the senseless slaughter of songbirds by hunters and children.

What strikes you as important about Miss Gate’s lesson on democracy? Miss Gates, lectures the class on the wickedness of Hitler’s persecution of the Jews and on the virtues of equality and democracy. Scout heard her say, though, that blacks needed to be taught a lesson.

The reason that Jem wants to gain weight is that he wants to go out for the football team. He tried out as a 7th grader (this year) but he was too skinny and the coach wouldn’t let him do anything other than carrying water buckets. So he feels he’d better gain weight.

After the court case when Tom was found guilty, Scout heard Miss Gates talking to someone. Miss Gates was talking about how Tom going to jail was the right thing. Scout is puzzled (confused) because she does not understand how Miss Gates can discriminate against black people and be against Hitler.
