Stainless Steel Straws. First, why straws at all? Undoubtedly, using them is more hygienic in restaurants, and they also protect your teeth from swimming in coffee and juice which erodes your enamel.

Overall, it’s true that paper straws are probably much better for the environment than their plastic counterparts. However, paper straws still come with their own set of environmental disadvantages. In general, more greenhouse gases are emitted during the production of paper products than their plastic counterparts.

While it’s true that paper straws aren’t as harmful as plastic straws, this doesn’t mean that they aren’t harmful at all. In fact, paper straws can still have many negative environmental effects, especially if they are improperly disposed.

And now today, Starbucks announced that it has fully phased out straws and flat lids, making strawless lids the standard for cold drinks at all of its stores across the U.S. and Canada. Starbucks has also pledged to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills 50 percent by 2030.

The coffee company says it hopes to eliminate more than 1 billion plastic straws per year. Starbucks’ plastic straws nix comes as the coffee giant continues its sustainability efforts of doing away with “packaging and plastics that end up in landfills” in favor of increased recyclable materials for their drinks.

The recyclable, lightweight strawless lid is made from polypropylene and has approximately nine percent less plastic than the flat lid and straw historically used for iced beverages. The new lid will now be the standard for all iced coffee, tea, espresso, and Starbucks Refreshers® beverages.

Starbucks Straws Are Cutting People’s Mouths The straws were sold in packages of three, and were also sold as part of reusable Grande and Venti-sized cups. They had a ridges to keep them attached to the cup’s lid, and were available to purchase at stores across the country and online from June 2012 to June 2016.

Grande is Italian for ‘large,’ venti means ‘twenty,’ and trenta is ‘thirty’. The sizes originated when Howard Schultz, the founder of Starbucks, opened his first coffee shop in Seattle in 1986. The shop, called Il Giornale, had just three sizes: short, tall, and grande.

The venti option is tricky, since it’s actually two different sizes. A hot venti beverage contains 20 ounces of coffee—in fact, the word venti means 20 in Italian. The cold venti is slightly larger, at 24 ounces.

First of all, here are the size options you can find at Starbucks: tall (12 ounces), grande (16), venti (24), and trenta (31). Let’s briefly address tall. This designation by the coffee company is considered by many to be a classic instance of corporate language manipulation.

“When venti was added, short dropped off the menu boards,” Overton says. “Starbucks decided that there wasn’t room for four sizes. So short got the boot and tall became the new short, or small.”

Starbucks announced plans on Sunday to roll out their version of the Big Gulp: the new, massive, 31-ounce cup size called the “Trenta.” (Trenta means “thirty” in Italian.) It will only be available for iced coffee and tea drinks, at $. 50 more than a Venti.

There is a small catch–the smoothies are served in a 16-ounce cup (grande). A smoothie is a drink that you can either share or have the barista provide you with an 8-ounce kids cup (tall size) that you can fill with some smoothie, so they have their cup to drink.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that kids aged 12 to 18 consume no more than 100 mg of caffeine per day, which is about the amount in a single 8 oz. cup of brewed coffee. But the impact even this moderate amount of caffeine has on young people is less clear than it is for adults.

The drink tastes just like a pink Starburst (a.k.a. the world’s favorite candy) — and that says a lot coming from someone who isn’t super into fruity drinks. It’s light, refreshing and will most definitely become my go-to beverage this summer. It’s been a good run, Chai Tea Latte.
