Females are fully grown at approximately two feet, weighing just over two pounds. They will reach their adult size around one to two years of age but don’t become sexually mature until two to three years of age. Hatchlings are about five to six inches in length.

Cage size should be 5-6 feet long x 2-3 feet deep x 4-6 feet high. Because of the large size requirements for water dragon enclosures AND their need for a higher humidity level, it is often difficult to keep the required humidity level high.

Asian water dragons, also known as the green water dragon or Chinese water dragon, can make beautiful pets but they have specific care needs that must be met in order for them to thrive. Once they are used to your presence, they are generally tame and easily handled.

Housing. Size – Appropriately sized and shaped habitat to accommodate normal behaviors and exercise. A minimum of a 40 gallon breeder is recommended for adult water dragons.

They are pretty active in their environment and like to climb on rocks, up trees, on branches, or in plants. They are also good swimmers and are happy when there is water in their enclosure as well. Chinese water dragons are social animals.

Chinese water dragons are prone to bacterial infections called pseudomonas, for instance. And other reptiles carry salmonella, botulism, campylobacteriosis, and leptospirosis.

You should use both of hands to lift the dragon and then allow it to rest on your hand or lap. Your hands need to be placed in a manner that your pet’s belly and chest area is well supported. The other hand should be used to support the upper body. Most dragons are not fond of the two hand hold and want to be free.

Meat: Meat is source of protein for water dragons, but is consumed less than insects in the wild (Cogger 2000). Mollusks, such as mussels and snails, and crustaceans, such as fresh crab meat and shrimp, can be fed to water dragons to mimic their natural diet.
