Diaper rash usually goes away within 2 to 3 days with home care, although it can last longer.

Diaper Rash Treatments

1. Cream or ointment with zinc oxide or petrolatum (petroleum jelly). Smooth it onto your baby’s clean, dry bottom before putting on a clean diaper.
2. Baby powder.
3. Antifungal cream, if your baby has a fungal infection.
4. Topical or oral antibiotics, if your baby has a bacterial infection.

Wash gently but thoroughly, including the skin folds. Do not use diaper wipes if your child has a rash, as they can burn and increase the irritation. You can sit the baby in a basin or tub of lukewarm water for several minutes with each diaper change. This helps clean and may also be comforting.

Sometimes, these wipes have added fragrances or cleansers that make diaper rash worse. Instead, try a soft wash cloth with water alone. If the stool is really hard to remove, you can use mild soap. Apply ointments at every diaper change to reduce irritation.
