Lookout Mountain

Sunset Rock Viewpoint is a 0.2 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Lookout Mountain, Tennessee that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and running and is best used from April until September.

Lookout Mountain via Bear Canyon Trail is a 8.3 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Mount Baldy, California that offers scenic views. The trail is only recommended for very experienced adventurers and is primarily used for hiking, camping, and backpacking.

Both the Incline Railway and Rock City are on Lookout Mountain, but they are in two different locations on the mountain and are about a 15 minute drive away from one another. The Incline Railway is on the TN side of Lookout Mountain and you can see Chattanooga from there.

The edge of Lookout Mountain is already in Georgia and a half mile from Chattanooga, TN. If you look southwest from your vantage point at the edge of Lookout Mountain, you’ll see Alabama 25 miles away. People also say that when the sky is clear and with a good set of binoculars you can see up to 7 different states.

It is $5 per person for 16 and over 15 and under are free. You also have to pay to park at the top of the mountain. You can go in the lookout at the Incline Railroad to see the city for free.

After visiting Rock City several times with my family over the years, I can tell you with certainty that the ticket price is worth it, no matter the season. Located atop Lookout Mountain just outside of Chattanooga, I’m convinced Rock City is one of the most beautiful and picture-worthy places in the US.

Technically, yes, there is a way around Fat Man’s Squeeze, but if you bypass it, you’ll miss a good portion of the enchanted trail, as you cannot get to some of the areas of the trail without going through the squeeze. There are technically two “squeeze” areas of Rock City’s Enchanted trail.

Yes you can do it all in one day. I would do the incline railway first, then ruby falls and end with rock city. I would allow an hour to hour and a half for each.

Ruby Falls obviously uses artificial lighting, widened the passages, and installed a walkway. These modifications were necessary to create a safe and accessible tourist cave experience. The question remains, is Ruby Falls a real waterfall.

An underground waterfall is something spectacular. We were just traveling through. If you’re nearby and have the time it is a must see. Ruby falls is a wonderful attraction for all the family.

As one of America’s must-see attractions, the breath-taking, 145-foot Ruby Falls is the tallest underground waterfall open to the public! The temperature inside Ruby Falls year-round is a cool 60 degrees. Add in a little humidity and the temperature in the cave feels like a perfect 70 degrees.

Ruby Falls is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. year-round. Tickets cost $22.95 for adults and $12.95 for children ages 3 to 12. Know that you must take a guided tour to enjoy the falls; you’ll select a specific time when you book. Specialty tours have their own fees and schedules.

On his next exploration into the cave, Lambert took several people including his wife Ruby to see the many wonders they had discovered. While gazing at the waterfall, Lambert told his wife that he would name it in her honor, “Ruby Falls.”

Ruby Falls requires a tour, Rock City can be self guided but there is still an entry fee. A paid tour is necessary to see the cave and Ruby Falls. We did not have to wait more than a few minutes to join a tour. It is a cave and the path is narrow in many places.

Unfortunately, the Incline Railway does not take you to Rock City. You will need to drive from that attraction to get to us, but we are only about 5 minutes away. The entrance to Rock City is about a 10-15 minute drive from the Incline Railway – closer to Ruby Falls.

If you frequent National Parks, the pass is worth the ~$80 or so, or for seniors or disabled, the pass is free. There is a small parking lot at the Visitor Center on top of the mountain.

Tickets sell out quickly! The Cave Walk to Ruby Falls is by reservation only, and tickets must be purchased online in advance.

Ruby Falls is a very easy walk through cave. The waterfall ending is very pretty but only worth seeing once. Most of the rock formations are dead but it is inside so much cooler than being out on a trail. Rock city does have great views amd nice trails but its gnome attractions are all very dated.

Wear weather appropriate clothing to visit Lookout Moutain Attractions. Most importantly, wear comfortable walking shoes. ►Rock City – This outdoor attraction is at the top of the mountain and the temperature is generally just a few degrees cooler than in the valley.

Rock City is almost always open rain or shine, but we may have to close temporarily in the event of severe weather. We do offer free ponchos on rainy days so you may explore the trail in rainy weather.
