Here are some factors that should be considered: Stairs typically run about 7.5 inches high each so for three stairs a standard rise or height would be about 22 inches. The ADA [Americans with Disabilities Act] recommends 1 foot for ramp for every one inch of rise.

A professionally-built wheelchair ramp will cost between $976 and $3,079, with an average of $2,021. Depending on the materials chosen for the structure and the price of labor, expect to pay between $100 and $250 per linear foot. A standard unit is 30 feet long, 30 inches wide, and 30 inches high.

Divide the length of the ramp by the height. This will be the second number in your ratio. The first number is always one. If the ramp measures 12 feet long and the rise is 2 feet, you would divide 12 by 2 to get 6, and your ratio would be 1 to 6.

The maximum recommended slope of ramps is 1:20. Steeper slopes may be allowed in special cases depending on the length to be covered (fig. 4). Ramps should be provided with landings for resting, maneuvering and avoiding excessive speed.

How far can a ramp go without a landing? A ramp with a slope between 1:12 and 1:16 can have a maximum horizontal length of 30′ | 9.14 m without a landing.

#3: A steep ramp is no problem The common misconception is that a ramp doesn’t need to be very long. A little longer than the stairs will be fine for Mom and Dad.

Multiply the result from Step 2 by the width of the ramp to find the volume of concrete needed in cubic yards. Completing the example, if the ramp is 1.5 yards wide, you would multiply 1.5 square yards by 1.5 yards wide to get 2.25 cubic yards.

Can I use plywood for a wheelchair ramp? For an indoor ramp, plywood might work, but when building a wheelchair ramp outdoors, use pressure-treated lumber.
