As of March 2020, there are 384 metropolitan statistical areas and 543 micropolitan statistical areas in the United States.

Metropolitan statistical area (MSA) is the formal definition of a region that consists of a city and surrounding communities that are linked by social and economic factors.

The purpose of an MSA is to set the bounds of the contractual relationship, establish a system for accomplishing the work that needs to be done, and to provide an efficient way to keep the work on track and resolve any disputes which may arise during the course of the project.
