Mix coverage combines the two main bracket types, in/out and under/over. This is confusing for the quarterback and offers bracket coverage on both #2 and #1. This coverage is trying to get double coverage on 2 receivers using only 3 defenders. This might sound like a paradox but it really isn’t.

The “BLUE” call is the away side coverage. This is the side away from the passing strength. The WS will let the away corner and linebacker know what the coverage is.

Every defensive coach would call Cover 1 — a man coverage with one safety playing in the deep middle and an extra defender lurking in the middle or adding on to the pass rush — every down if they could get away with it. Nick Saban has called it the best coverage in football.

“Leo” is a relatively new defensive role, a hybrid position that is not quite a defensive end and not quite a linebacker. Befitting its “tweener” status, the name “Leo” contains the “L” of “linebacker” and the “E” of “end.” The position has also been called “Elephant,” with the “E” and “L” in reverse order.

The LEO defense is unique. It relies on two immovable objects to get the job done. The 5 and 1 tech need to be able to hold two blockers and be immovable objects that don’t necessarily make plays against the run, but free up other players to make them. They cannot be blocked with one man.

In American football, a 4–3 defense is a defensive alignment consisting of four down linemen and three linebackers. It is called a “base defense” because it is the default defensive alignment used on “base downs” (1st and 2nd downs).

Seattle is a base 4-3 personnel defense. The Seahawks have plug-and-played their early down defensive tackle pairings. However, there has been a fascination from the franchise in trying to find genuine pass-rush from the 3-tech spot.

7-technique is a defensive lineman in 3-4 or 4-3 defense formations. This player is 1-gap defender. Its responsibility is C-gap shade, 7 technique stands inside the tight end and outside of tackle shoulders. It jams the tight end trying to block its free route.

The 4-2-5 Defense features four defensive linemen, two inside linebackers, and five defensive backs ( 2 CBs, 1 FS, and 2 OLB/S hybrids which we call Dogs). The strength of this defense is that it includes five defensive backs.

Two snaps, two completely different fronts with a different combination of personnel and assignments. This is what it means to be “multiple” as a defense.

While American (11-player) formations generally use two safeties, Canadian (12-player) formations generally have one safety and two defensive halfbacks, a position not used in the American game.

There is a one-point safety, and it is highly unlikely. As in, it has never happened in the NFL, unlikely. Because that play was on an extra-point attempt (or a two-point conversion attempt), only one point would be awarded – thus the one-point safety.
