Edhi Foundation has set-up 18 homes all over Pakistan (seven homes are running at Karachi). As a whole, 8500 younger boys and girls including elder ladies and gents have been accommodated in 18 homes.

In December 2018, an agreement was signed between the government of Sindh (Pakistan People’s Party) and the Patients Aid Foundation (PAF) to run an ambulance service, free of cost, in Sindh. This will be operated on the basis of the public-private partnership (PPP).

Now sixty years after, the Edhi ambulance has reached to the stage of largest fleet of ambulances in the world, thereby providing with a tantalizing number of ambulances—such as 1800 vehicles, all over our country – Pakistan.

Word AMBULANCE is written in reverse because the mirror shows a characteristic of what we call “lateral inversion”. An ambulance carries emergency patients, and it requires to drive fast on its way to the hospital. So when the preceding vehicles see the name easily they can provide a way for the ambulance to overtake.

Management of all funds is centralized and remains in the exclusive controls of Edhi with his son Faisal Edhi and Daughter Kubra Edhi who are personally involved in all operations of the foundation. They are also responsible national and international fund-raising.

The ambulance service provides first aid to the patient and transport them to the nearest Community Health Centre or Government hospitals. There are 10017 ambulances operating as 102 patient transport.

Ambulances are not usually free. They cost a lot to keep on the road and charge a lot to get you from point A to point B. How much will you pay? That’s a question almost no one is going to be able to answer for you, especially not the paramedics.

Paramedics in the capital are taking up to 8,000 999 calls a day – compared to 5,500 on a typical ‘busy’ day. In a statement, LAS said “demand for our services has risen sharply over the past weeks”, as coronavirus cases surge due to the prominence of a new Covid variant.

“Typically we receive over 1,000 calls a day to the 999 number and our operatives have to deal with each one accordingly.”

Ambulance services are measured on the time it takes from receiving a 999 call to the vehicle arriving at the patient’s location. It should take 8 minutes for the ambulance to arrive if the call is life threatening or an emergency. Ambulance services often send more than one vehicle to try to meet the 8 minute target.

In 1968, AT announced that it would establish the digits 9-1-1 (nine-one-one) as the emergency code throughout the United States. The code 9-1-1 was chosen because it best fit the needs of all parties involved.
