Etymology. Ākāśavāni (आकाशवाणी) is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘celestial announcement’ or ‘voice from the sky/heaven’. Akashvani was later adopted as All India Radio’s on-air name in 1957.

Legally, for air-to-air communications between private, fixed-wing aircraft, there is just one authorized frequency: 122.75 MHz. For general aviation helicopters: 123.025 MHz.

Frequency Modulation (FM) is the encoding of information in a carrier wave by changing the instantaneous frequency of the wave. FM technology is widely used in the fields of computing, telecommunications, and signal processing.

Medium wave (MW) is the part of the medium frequency (MF) radio band used mainly for AM radio broadcasting. The spectrum provides about 120 channels with limited sound quality. MW was the main radio band for broadcasting from the beginnings in the 1920s into the 1950s until FM with a better sound quality took over.

With FM, the frequency (the number of times each second that the current changes direction) of the carrier signal is varied. FM signals have a great advantage over AM signals. Both signals are susceptible to slight changes in amplitude. With an AM broadcast, these changes result in static.

In radio, longwave, long wave or long-wave, and commonly abbreviated LW, refers to parts of the radio spectrum with wavelengths longer than what was originally called the medium-wave broadcasting band. Most modern radio systems and devices use wavelengths which would then have been considered ‘ultra-short’.

An AM signal may be either long wave (LW), medium wave (MW) or short wave (SW) depending upon whether the frequency of the carrier wave is low, medium or high. Medium wave (MW) signals are transmitted using amplitude modulation (AM) and the terms are used interchangeably.

AM stands for Amplitude Modulation and has poorer sound quality compared with FM, but it is cheaper to transmit and can be sent over long distances — especially at night. The lower frequencies of the band we use for AM signals creates a wavelength that is extremely large.

Shortwave radio received its name because the wavelengths in this band are shorter than 200 m (1,500 kHz) which marked the original upper limit of the medium frequency band first used for radio communications. The broadcast medium wave band now extends above the 200 m / 1,500 kHz limit.

Its not because it is FM that allows stereo,it is because by the time it was feasible, FM was being broadcast at 100 Mhz whereas AM is at 1Mhz. This allowed wider bandwidths needed for stereo. A2A: They both started as mono and are now both stereo.
