New York City has already surpassed the city’s seasonal average snowfall of 28.5 inches, as 32.5 inches of snow have fallen in the city so far in the 2020-2021 season. This season’s total is just over 2 feet more than the total for the 2019-20 season in which New York City officially recorded just 4.8 inches of snow.

Feb. 6-7, 1978 – Less than three weeks after 13.6″ of snow buried the City, an even bigger snowstorm struck. Snow began before dawn and by midnight 15.5″ had fallen in Central Park. An additional 2.2″ fell the next morning.

The 2011-12 winter will long be remembered for warmth and lack of snow, and in some locations near record setting snowfall departures. Cold blasts were few and short lived and the snow that did fall quickly melted. Many areas were green for much of the winter as widespread synoptic snows were also few and light.

The winter of 2010–11 was a weather event that brought heavy snowfalls, record low temperatures, travel chaos and school disruption to the islands of Great Britain and Ireland.

December 2012 Temperatures remained above average east of the Rockies, and the U.S. Northeast experienced the 7th warmest winter on record. Meanwhile, rainfall totals were 0.51 inches above average making December 2012 the 20th wettest December on record.

The 2013 blizzard became Boston’s fifth-biggest snowstorm with 24.9 inches of snow.

New York City officially recorded 11.4 inches (29 cm) of snow at Central Park, and Portland, Maine, set a record of 31.9 inches (81 cm)….February 2013 North American blizzard.

According to ski resort numbers, Jay Peak in Vermont gets the most snow in the Northeast claiming that they average 380 inches of snowfall per year.

The Blizzard of 1978 5 to 7, 1978. Cadima was 10 years old when the storm hit New England and vividly remembers the weather event, sometimes called the Great Blizzard of ’78. It was the “greatest snowstorm” he had ever seen, the meteorologist noted.

In fact, we’ve seen record-setting whoppers in just the past decade alone — though written records of major blizzards stretch back more than 300 years, at this point. Here are some of the most noteworthy snow events to hit Maine over the past three centuries.

The snowfall season usually runs from late October (in the north) or November (most of the rest of the State) to April and sometimes into May. Total seasonal snowfall ranges between 50 and 80 inches on the coast, between 60 to 90 inches in the southern part of the state and 90 to 110-plus inches in the north.

The state of Maine is fairly lucky, because natural disasters are relatively infrequent. Maine does, however, experience earthquakes, floods, hurricanes and landslides. Certain areas of the state are more prone to experience natural disasters than others.

Nor’easter storms can be quite dangerous. They can cause strong winds, flooding, heavy rain and heavy snowfall. They’re typically considered extreme storms.

What is a Blizzard? The National Weather Service defines a blizzard as a storm with large amounts of snow or blowing snow, winds greater than 35 mph (56 kph), and visibility of less than ¼ mile (0.4 km) for at least three hours. Some blizzards, called ground blizzards, have no falling snow.
