It is governed by the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL), which oversees nine constituent leagues across Canada as of 2021. The national championship is the Centennial Cup. As of 2021, there is one Hockey Canada sanctioned Junior A league that is not a member of the CJHL: the British Columbia Hockey League.

Junior A. The British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) is the Junior A league in BC. More players from the BCHL have gone on to play university or college hockey than any other league in Canada. These athletes have gone on to both US and Canadian schools.

Junior B and C is open to all other teams wishing to compete for the Junior categories of Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships.

OHL players don’t earn a salary, as they are not recognized as workers under the Employment Standards Act. Yet, they count on benefits such as annual reimbursements, all education costs paid, and free tickets. They also get free meals, equipment, apparel (on/off-ice), and transport.

Many associations require players to be five years old. Kids that start hockey before they are physically and mentally ready are more likely to have a negative experience. It is never too late to start playing hockey. Players have joined hockey programs at 12-13 years old and still made varsity hockey teams.

United States. As in Canada, junior hockey in the United States is subdivided into several levels with most being sanctioned by USA Hockey. Currently, 13 American teams play in the Canadian junior system, with eight in the Canadian Hockey League and five in junior A leagues.
