The honest truth is that in general Windsor has a much lower crime rate than Detroit. That being said the major tourist areas of Detroit are quite safe and I’ve stayed there several times.

Detroit has long had a reputation as one of the country’s most dangerous cities. In reality, living in Detroit isn’t much different than living in any other big city. Its neighborhoods are made up of tight-knit, friendly communities, and a sense of camaraderie makes the big city feel like home.

Detroit is generally safe for tourists, though some neighborhoods are best avoided. Since Detroit’s Downtown is not as big as a lot of other Metropolitan Downtowns you’re actually pretty safe considering there are police stations within a mile from each location, quite a few police driving around and during the summer months walking around or riding horses. So Downtown is pretty safe actually.

Detroit has a higher crime rate than Chicago. As of 2018, Detroit had the third highest murder rate among major cities in the United States after St. Louis and Baltimore and the 42nd highest murder rate in the world. Detroit is at 39 murders per 100,000 and Chicago is at 24 per 100,000.
