About 9 million U.S. citizens are living abroad, the U.S. Department of State estimates. Nearly 1 in 4 American expats are “seriously considering” or “planning” to renounce their U.S. citizenship, a survey from Greenback Expat Tax Services found.

More Americans Move Abroad Every Year The U.S. State Department estimates that number to be around 10 million in 2020, which is more than double the number of Americans residing overseas in 1999, when the same department reported it to be 4 million.

How does the Census Bureau obtain the counts of overseas federal employees? Agencies and departments of the U.S. government provide the Census Bureau with counts of their overseas employees (and their dependents living with them overseas) by their home state based on their administrative records.

No Longer Can One Lose U.S. Citizenship By Living in Another Country. At this time, no penalties exist if a naturalized U.S. citizen simply goes to live in another country. This is a distinct benefit of U.S. citizenship, since green card holders can have their status taken away for “abandoning” their U.S. residence.

By a quirk of fate, most Americans residing abroad have not been included in the decennial US census since 1970, shortly before overseas Americans gained their right to vote in federal elections. Basically, the Census Bureau is not constitutionally mandated to count Americans abroad.

If you’re continuously living outside of the UK for any period of 12 months or more that includes Sunday 21 March 2021, you don’t need to fill in a census form.
