How heavy is natural stone/quartz, and will my cabinets support the new weight? Granite and marble are roughly 6 pounds per square foot per centimeter of thickness. For example, a 2cm slab of granite weighs approximately 12 pounds per square foot and a 3cm slab weighs approximately 18 – 22 pounds per square foot.

Quartz countertops are heavy, and not all cabinetry is strong enough to hold it. In addition, you may have unsupported areas, such as desks or overhangs that may need some support. If your cabinets cannot hold the weight of the quartz, plywood or backer board may be used beneath the countertop to help.

While the density of each stone and the slab size will affect the weight, 3cm granites weigh about 19 pounds per square foot, or about 900-1,200 pounds per slab. A 2cm marble will weigh approximately 600-700 pounds per slab.

When it comes to quartz slabs, the two most common thicknesses are 2cm (~¾”) and 3cm (1 ¼”). It’s also possible to create the look of a thicker countertop by building up the edge.

The 3cm countertop withstands heavier weight because of the added thickness, so it’s the better choice for spaces that will see heavier traffic and use. Note that you should take extra care with a 2cm countertop with its edges exposed since they withstand less weight.

One of the first things to secure is the type of polish to buff the scratches with. The best way to go is to look for quartz formulated buffing or polishing compounds. You would then want to apply a half dollar size of the polishing compound on the area being repaired.

To do it, add 25% vinegar to 75% water and mix it in a spray bottle. You can also purchase a vinegar-based spray cleaner. Spray and polish as you work your way across the counter to keep the surfaces looking excellent. For extra dazzle, give the countertops the final polish using some spray and microfiber cloth.

When you are cleaning your quartz countertops, it is important to only use soft cloths. We mentioned that it is important that you use only gentle chemicals on your quartz countertops. Some of these include dish soap, Simple Green, Magic Eraser, denatured alcohol, Rug Doctor Cleaner, or Hope’s Surface Cleaner.

To remove water marks on quartz, make a paste of one-part each of water and baking soda. Rub that into the limescale stain with small circular motions and a soft sponge. Bob Vila suggests using glass cleaner on fairly fresh rings on a quartz countertop.
