Understanding the terms of your DIRECTV service

In order to get all the great 4K programming DIRECTV has to offer, you’ll need the right hardware and programming. The DIRECTV HR54 Genie DVR is an absolute must-have. Without it, you won’t receive any 4K TV programming at all. You’ll also need some way to watch 4K since the HR54 does not output a 4K signal.

Record satellite television programming at any time you wish with a DVR. Although DirecTV offers a built-in DVR function, it charges a monthly rental rate. This may add up over time, so if you are looking to save a little money, you can purchase your own DVR and hook it up to a DirecTV receiver.

Actually, there is. Disconnect the DVR from the dish, phone line and any network connection before contacting DirecTV to cancel or suspend service. The DVR will never get a non-authorized message, and recordings will still be viewable.

DIRECTV DVRs can’t be used for over-the-air reception. They can’t be used for other services. If you don’t have to return them, you can strip the hard drives out but remember that they’ve been sitting in your dusty entertainment center for years. Those drives could fail at any time.
