The 318 engine is absolutely the best all-around small block Mopar, in my opinion. It can easily make 400 plus horsepower and still has great street manners. Each are good engines, but for performance use, you should stick with the LA or Magnum because performance parts for the 318 Poly are hard to find.

the easiest is just dropping some used stock 360 heads on it along with some used headers and a 4bbl carb. The open chamber heads KILL your compression, but the flow improvement, along with the headers and carb can put you at an honest 300hp which is plenty enough to have a tire boiling good time in any a-body.

The 360 crank is not a “bolt in” as the main journals are larger; you need to have the journals machined down to the 318 size to drop it in the block.

The Magnum engine can last you around 250000 to 300000 miles. This is more than enough. Plus, the engine is quite old at this point, so if you are getting one, and it has been driven a lot, you may still have a lot of miles on it.

The combustion chambers are wedge-shaped, rather than the polyspherical combustion chambers in the predecessor A engine or the hemispherical combustion chambers in the Chrysler Hemi engine….
