Some people feed twice a day, morning and night, others feed once a day. Burgess advises that “Food is usually fed in ½ portions twice daily, so the pet gets a couple of meals a day, rather than consuming all their food in a few hours and fasting for the next 20 hours.”

Each day, one to two tablespoons of kibble should be offered to an adult hedgehog in addition to a teaspoon of fruits and vegetables and some insects. Larger and very active hedgehogs may need more food, but your hedgehog’s weight should be monitored with the use of a baby scale.

Your hedgie should have an unlimited supply of food in his cage at all hours (free-feed). But you should also change his food daily to prevent the food from getting stale. So, count the amount of kibble that your hedgie eats every night and put that amount+some.

Make sure you don’t put out too much food, as it’s not nice to have leftovers lying around, and just remember that what we provide is supplementary to their natural diet, so do not overfeed your ‘hogs. Never feed hedgehogs milk or bread as they can’t digest them and it upsets their stomachs.

So, do hedgehogs overeat? Hedgehogs can overeat when it comes to feeding them certain foods like insects especially mealworms and crickets. Even though hedgehogs are naturally insectivores, overeating on insects can cause health issues like metabolic bone disease.

Hedgehogs might make the quacking noise if they are stuck in something. Young hedgehogs also tend to make this noise if they are hungry.

Hedgehogs will leave some crumbs, whereas a cat will wipe the bowl clean. A hedgehog may also leave you a calling card in the bowl or nearby. For this reason it is also vital to keep your feeding station clean.

Typically it’s suggested to spot clean daily (take out the obviously dirty parts of bedding), then do a full cage cleaning & bedding change at least once a week.

If we decide to give him something like chicken, then I tend to not leave it in his food bowl but nearer to his house to entice him out in the evening and any leftover is thrown away. It’s imperative to change the water every day as hedgehogs may inadvertently poop in their own water as they move around.

Most hedgehogs tend to urinate and poop a lot in their wheels. The monthly deep cleaning is by far the most work-intensive. You need to clean the whole cage with everything in it once in a while and now is the right time.
