Vesuvius Today Vesuvius is still very much an active stratovolcano, with the city of Naples and its 3 million residents only a mere 12 kilometres away. Whilst these efforts are being administered, there are a multitude of visitors that come to see what the destruction of Vesuvius did to Pompeii.

The quick answer: Vesuvius volcano in the Gulf of Naples, Italy. The reason is that Vesuvius’typical eruptions are very explosive and the slopes of the volcano and immediate area surrounding the volcano are extremely densely populated; even the city of Naples is only about 20 km away from the volcano.

The rhyolite magma chamber beneath Yellowstone is only 5-15% molten (the rest is solidified but still hot), so it is unclear if there is even enough magma beneath the caldera to feed an eruption. The most active volcanoes in the world Kilauea volcano on Hawaii is the world’s most active volcano, followed by Etna in Italy and Piton de la Fournaise on La Réunion island.

Indonesia is a volcanically active country, containing numerous major volcanoes. It has the most volcanoes of any country in the world, with 76 volcanoes that have erupted at least 1,171 times in total within historical times.

Although in a dormant phase at present, Vesuvius is an extremely active volcano and particular for its unusually varied style of activity: it ranges from Hawaiian-style emission of very liquid lava, extreme lava fountains, lava lakes and lava flows, over Strombolian and Vulcanian eruptions to violently explosive.

The Volcano Today Vesuvius is still the only active volcano in all of Europe, nicknamed the ‘sleeping giant’ by locals. Scientists have estimated its time period between eruptions and have gathered it is due for another eruption soon.

No, they did not. Vesuvius had not erupted in the preceding 1500 years; there was no apprehension that it would. The Roman world was notably uninformed about volcanoes in general; they had Stromboli and Mt Etna, and not much else.

One survivor who we have a record of was Cornelius Fuscus, who later died in a military campaign. In an inscription following his name, it states that he was from the colony of Pompeii, then he lived in Naples and then he joined the army.

That’s because between 15,000 and 20,000 people lived in Pompeii and Herculaneum, and the majority of them survived Vesuvius’ catastrophic eruption. One of the survivors, a man named Cornelius Fuscus later died in what the Romans called Asia (what is now Romania) on a military campaign.

Vesuvius that buried a whole Roman town. The biggest myth of all is that the citizens of Pompeii never knew the blast was coming. They did. Archaeologists excavated the town over the past century, discovering beautifully-preserved examples of Roman art and architecture.
