Mob heads are arguably the most valuable decorative items in Minecraft. They are the item that allows map creators to use unimaginable textures in their custom Minecraft maps. And that's just the surface of their usefulness. So let's take a deep dive into their world and learn how to get and use mob heads in Minecraft.

Minecraft 1.20 Note Blocks and Mob Heads Update

Please note that this guide's functionality is based on Minecraft 1.20 Snapshot 22W46A. So every mechanic is subject to changes before the final release.

Mob heads are helmet-like replicas of the heads of various Minecraft mobs. They can be placed as decorative items on other blocks. But unlike other decorative blocks, some of the mob heads even move when connected to a powered Redstone component. These movements resemble the mob they belong to.

With the release of Minecraft snapshot 22w46a, we have 7 mob heads in Minecraft, six of which belong to Minecraft mobs and one is exactly the same as the player's head. Interestingly, the player's mob head will be a copy of the head on the player's skin in the game. Once a mob head is created, they are not affected by the player changing their skin. So you can use different Minecraft skins to create a collection of unique player heads.
