If you want to create basically any automated farm in Minecraft, you need a container. They pick up items, store them and transport them in containers for you. Hopper can collect items in your world, extract items from containers, and shoot items into chests. These mechanics will be explained in detail below, but for now, let's see how to place a container.

This block has a wide upper part and a narrow tube-like part at the bottom. This indicates that it can collect objects from above and then capsize them through the lower part. You can choose where it should be.

So the funnel output can be attached to any of the four sides of a block or the top side of a block. You can simply look at the selected block's side and right-click with a container selected to place it. If you want to attach it to a container directly, you have to sneak by pressing the Shift key. You can't rotate the container, so if you want to attach it to the bottom side of a block, it just points straight down.
