Long before Vin Diesel shot to international stardom with the Fast & Furious franchise in 2001, the actor received a bizarre but memorable recruiting call from Steven Spielberg. After his prolific work in the 1995 short drama Multi-Facial and the 1997 feature film Strays, the actor surprisingly fell under the radar of Hollywood's most celebrated filmmakers in 1998.

According to Vin Diesel's interview with Yahoo Movies, the actor recalled how he was notified by his agent about his role in Steven Spielberg's 1998 war film Saving Private Ryan. Initially expecting the usual audition process, Diesel was later informed that Spielberg had specifically written a role for him as required no audition.
