As with most survival games, the start of Icarus can be somewhat brutal. You'll want to level up as quickly as possible so you can get talents and blueprints to improve your survivability.
Gaining experience with Ikaros is a fairly simple and straightforward affair. Everything you do gives you experience points. Regardless of whether it is hunting, crafts or collecting. Every action matters when it comes to collecting levels. That said, some things can certainly make you experience early much faster.
A very quick method is to just chop trees. All this requires is a stone axe, some food and an area with lots of trees. Chop trees until they start to fall. When they start to fall, just move on to the next tree without stopping to split the logs. This should get you a lot of experience pretty quickly early on.
