International Monetary Fund Managing Director Dr Kristalina Georgieva has warned of a "tsunami" hitting the global job market as companies adopt AI technology.

Georgieva was speaking at an event organized by the Swiss Institute for International Studies. Professor Thomas Jordan, Chairman of the Board of the Swiss National Bank, also participated in the discussion on 13 May 2024.
It's a slow tsunami. Despite the hype surrounding the technology, its full effect has not yet been fully felt. It's certainly on the way, though, as evidenced by junior programmers who look grimly at roles eliminated by AI assistants like GitHub's Copilot.
Georgieva told the Zurich event that artificial intelligence is likely to affect almost half of jobs worldwide (40 percent) and more than half (60 percent) of jobs in advanced economies, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, echoing a blog post from earlier in year.
